Compact Deity is proud to represent Arab-American Rock Music for Detroit's 24th Annual Diversity Festival, Concert of Colors. “Compact Deity” is a Detroit rock band formed by guitarist, singer and songwriter Tarik Al-Kadhim. Tarik is an Arab-American of Iraqi and German heritage. He became obsessed with Rock Music and guitar after hearing Led Zeppelin’s ‘Black Dog’ on the radio when he was 4. He began playing the guitar and writing songs at 8 years of age. Tarik co-founded his first band at 11, began professional recording at 13, performed in nightclubs by age 15, became a studio musician at 16, and signed his first record contract on his 18th birthday. Still he remained true to his roots and often wears a “keffiyeh” (Arabic head gear) onstage and greets his audiences with ‘Salaam Alaikum’. The music of Compact Deity draws influence from a combination of Eastern and Western sources. Mid-Eastern and African Oud techniques are evident in Al-Kadhim’s guitar playing style. The song subject matter boasts literary, artistic and historical scholarship. The lyrics display his fondness for creative writing, symbolism and word play. Compact Deity includes Paul Chisholm on drums and Richard Creagh on bass guitar. The band has recorded one EP ‘Modern Noise: Detroit’ (2005) and two full length albums: ‘Trancemantra’ (2008) recorded at the Tempermill and ‘Evil Eye’ (2011) recorded with Al Sutton at Rustbelt Studios. Sunday, July 17, 2pm @ Max M. Fisher Music Center, Detroit Comerica Diversity Stage (The Music Box) 2 p.m. Detroit Arab American Sound Experience (Arab American rock) (with: Mazaj & Detroit Jamerz)
